தேசிய பௌதிக திட்டமிடல் திணைக்களம் (NPPD) பட்டண மற்றும் கிராமிய திட்டமிடல் திணைக்களத்தின் பின்னுரிமையாளராகும். இது 1946ஆம் ஆண்டின் 13ஆம் இலக்க பட்டண மற்றும் கிராமிய திட்டமிடல் கட்டளைச்சட்டத்தின் ஏற்பாடுகளின் கீழ் ஸ்தாபிக்கப்பட்டது. இந்தக் கட்டளைச்சட்டம் 2000ஆம் ஆண்டின் 49ஆம் இலக்க சட்டத்தின் மூலம் திருத்தப்பட்டு தேசிய பௌதிக கொள்கையை உருவாக்குவதற்கும் தேசிய பௌதிக திட்டத்தைத் தயாரிப்பதற்கும் மூல சட்டவாக்கத்தின் ஏற்பாடுகளின் விடயப்பரப்பு விரிவுபடுத்தப்பட்டது. இதன்போது திணைக்களத்தின் பெயர் மாற்றப்பட்டது.
